Some people undergo vigorous
workouts, while some keep a check on what they eat.
But some like Bhojpuri actress Durgesh Nandini are
really desperate to lose weight.
Nandini has put her heavy arms in a cast, to ensure
that the muscles there waste away enough to give her
a toned, slender limb. Dr Rahul Nigam of Dr Nigam's
Goodhealth clinic in Andheri said he's been using
the technique on Bollywood's leading ladies, beauty
queens and upcoming actors for more than six months
now. It has been so successful that he's now applied
for a US patent to safeguard his design.
"We apply a cream over the area, which consists of
ingredients that keep the skin soft and firm and
also helps the muscle to degenerate uniformly. Then
we put a cast there."
The procedure is a godsend for Nandini. The actress
who was a gymnast has been training since she was
four and thus has bulky arm muscle. "Nothing helped
me, not massages, not creams and not surgery. So, as
a last resort I'm putting my arm in the cast. Since
I want to act in Bollywood film, I don't want
anything to come in my way," she said.
Thankfully, not everyone's enthused about the new
procedure. "This is what we see in people of some
African countries where the muscle wastes away
because of no nutrition. Why can't the doctor target
fat cells instead?" said Dr Richa Anand, a dietician
with L H Hiranandani Hospital.
Cost
Each sitting costs around Rs 3,000 and takes four to
six weeks before the cast comes off. Dr Nigam said,
the results can be as expansive as reducing a size
36 waist to size 32 in a month. The procedure is
followed by cardiovascular exercise and massages.
